A.I.M by Kyle Abraham is now presenting another premiere: In CASSETTE VOL. 1, paying tribute to the music of the 1980s and early 90s when pop music became omnipresent in public life. To the soundtrack of a decade, the dancers show through rousing choreographies how pop music shapes society into a universal experience. With multifaceted movement material inspired by postmodern icons such as Trisha Brown and the evolution of queer culture in the 80s, Abraham creates an exhilarating evening in homage to nostalgia and camp.
With the birth of music video culture in the early 1980s, an awakening of fantasy, street culture, and a popular hybridization of form seemed like the way of the future. Danced to music that’s equal parts M/A/R/R/S, Suzanne Vega, Salt-N-Pepa, the B-52’s, LL Cool J, and Prince. Cassette Vol. 1 will premiere at the International Summer Festival in Kampnagel, Germany in August.
Abraham’s approach to artmaking is more than dance — it's an avenue for genuine storytelling and cultural articulation. Come join us!
“Kyle Abraham has a mission — and it’s bigger than himself. He likes to spread the love with his company, A.I.M, and, in doing so, broaden the viewer’s experience of what a dance concert by a choreographer-led company can be.”
